그토록 가고싶어한 프랑스 유학을 처음엔 결사 반대하셨던 어머니, 실은 누구보다도 저를 가장 아끼고 응원을 해 주시는 분이라는 걸 어른이 되어서야 깨달았습니다. 1분 1초를 아껴 공부하며 지냈던 힘겨운 인고의 유학 생활을 거쳐 국제회의통역사, 교수 그리고 한국을 알리는 커뮤니케이터가 될 수 있었던 배경에는 어머니의 한결같고 든든한 지원이 있었습니다. 어머니는 새벽형 인간인 저를 10여년이 넘도록 매일 새벽 4시에 깨워 주시고, 통역 일과 회의 참석, 해외 출장으로 집을 비웠을 때는 저 대신 외국인들에게서 걸려오는 전화도 받으시고, 행여 잊을까 메모도 해주시고, 교수와 통역사 활동에 도움이 될까 세계 현안에 대한 기사 신문 기사를 오려 스크랩까지 해 주셨답니다. 당시엔 지금처럼 인터넷이 없었잖아요. 지금은 연세가 있으셔서 기억력이 많이 감퇴하셔서 안타깝지만, 어머니의 재치와 순발력은 여전해 정말 놀랍고도 그저 감사할 따름입니다. 늘 지금처럼 건강하세요! 저의 가장 든든한 지원군, 울 엄마! '나의 어머니 이야기' 영상을 통해 같이 볼까요? My mother, who was at times strict, and who had at first strongly opposed me going to Paris to study, was my strongest supporter who always cheered for me. The reason why I was able to get through my difficult studies abroad, became a conference interpreter, a professor, and a communicator who promotes Korea, was all thanks to my mother. For 10 years from middle school onwards, my mother would always wake me at 4AM at my request so that I could study in the early morning, took calls and notes from my foreign friends who called me while I was away on business trips, and saved newspaper clippings of world issues for me too. Due to old age, her memory has deteriorated a lot, but I still get surprised and am thankful for her wit which still shines through today.
