Business Culture of Silicon Valley

1. Unrestricted Time and Place

In Korea, the meeting is decided whenever the boss tells you we have a meeting, and that’s why you always have to be at your desk.

In Silicon Valley, it is focused around the individuals, but that doesn’t mean they don’t work with face to face meeting. Everything is fixed.

The difference between Korea companies and Google is that in Korea, we work only as an organization and they have hierarchy. But in Google, everyone share their calendar whether it is a CEO or executive and there are set schedule. That is the reason that people in Google can manage their schedule well.

2. Strict Performance Evaluation

Google has strict performance evaluation.

In order to evaluate individual, we need to set up standard. First of all, you need to define what it is that they do, and it’s very specific.

Google called that OKR - Objective Key Results. Every individual write their own OKR in every quarter. (What my objective are? What my key results are?)

If you achieve the 70% OKR, then that is considered good.

Related to the OKR, all people around of you can evaluate with the three steps below.

-What have the person done?

-What is the good thing the person did?

-Is there anything the person need to improve?

Because the person actually read what the other wrote about their results, it is very important and you need to write the ‘Feedback’.

And then, the person gets three kinds of signal lights.

-Meet Expectation

-Exceed Expectation

-Below Expectation

In most of Korea company, promotion is based on the years of service on the company, however, in Google, you can be promoted when you are evaluated Exceed Expectation.

If someone got the below expectation, the company give them opportunity to find the proper roles. In case of Meet Expectation, you just stay the same position.

3. Notifying Culture

People in Google share the successful story of their achievement with their colleague and boss, every members in Google.

You need to PR yourself in the Silicon Valley’s Culture. Let the people know your achievement, and it happens through an e-mail.

In the e-mail, you don’t say ‘I am just doing great’, you need to add the meaning to it; why you would like to people know.

When you send the e-mail, you write all the name your team member, and get the complimentary reply to others.

4. Powerful Manager and Open Management

In Silicon Valley, the managers, the actual business team, has power to make a decision, and management, company’s executives, support the managers to achieve the goal as a mentor.

Also, in Korea, everybody emphasize crisis, however, Google said that we are in on rocket, and we are flying high! Let’s work harder!

5. Respect for Diversity Culture

The bay area is well known for respecting diversity. So, there are lots of diversity and people are sensitive to the diversity.

In Google, if they did a good job, then they can move up regardless of their age, ethnicity, etc. And I think it is big merits of working in the bay area.

6. Networking Culture

Most of Korean people have difficulties on networking with others.

However, networking is important at Silicon Valley, and you can get an opportunity to make a success the new business during the networking.

7. Application and Utilization rather than Imitation and Longing

Each business culture has strengths and weaknesses.

In the U.S., it takes a long time to make a decision because every individuals can discuss on one topic continuously. However, in Korea the decision make a lot quicker because of the organization culture.

So, I would like to emphasize that application and utilization rather than imitation and longing toward Silicon Valley is the key point to improve for the Korean Companies.
