Dear Korea CQ members,
On last October 14th, Korea CQ members visited 'Sil Grim Museum', the embroidery art museum located in Gepodong.

Son Insook Son, the director of the museum and the embroidery master welcomed us with a fabulous Korean traditional costume, Hanbok.
Thanks to great hospitality of the director, everyone enjoyed dinner. Namul (vegetable Korean side dish), handmade dish of the director and staff of the museum, and wines, also prepared by the museum, were served.
Afterward, our members gathered around the table and had some friendly conversations, catching up with one another while having deserts, which were served on beautiful ceramic dishes.
After the dinner, the main event of the night began. We appreciated Director Son's embroidery works, all her creative pieces. Every members was amused with her creative and sophisticated art works that many of us could not resist to admire them.
The art pieces were complete with special technique, using natural dyed strings to prevent the fading and alteration which make them look more realistic and gorgeous. The director explained that many of her art works, such as letterbox using hinge, were inspired from her mother who recognized her talent from young age and trained her to develop special skills.
The museum is filled with about 5,000 collections and the collections attracted our members. There were golden string embroidered chest box, screens describing the seasons with various colors of strings, embroidery tiger which was so vivid that it looked as if he would come out of the frame in any second and even Najeonchilgi, Korean traditional jewelry box usually inlaid with mother of pearl, was decorated with embroidery of mother of pearl and it looked so realistic that people would think it is the real mother of pearl.
Our members admired and shouted bravo to the collections and showed their deep interest on Korean traditional embroidery art by asking director over her own techniques, types of strings and needle, work time and such.
Among the collections, the most popular one was the embroidery Miindo(portrait of beauty) which is originally a painting of Yoonbok Shin the Hyewon who was the famous painter of the late Chosun Dynasty. This masterpiece will be displayed in Musee Guimet, France on October 2015 to celebrate the 130 year diplomatic relationship of Korea and France.
We could experience the enthusiasm and soul of Director Son over embroidery art.
The director asked more and constant interest over Korean embroidery art and shared her ambition to spread it worldwide to show the honor and nobility of Korean culture.
With all respect, we acknowledge the enthusiasm of the director who research constantly to pursuit novelty and want to appreciate the 'Yewon Sil Grim Foundation' for allowing us to enjoy the amazing collections.
Also special thanks to Jang Soomin, the curator, and professor Lim Hyan-ok for the translation which led to the deeper understanding and other members who enjoyed the night with us.
