Dear Korea CQ members,

I hope you are having a great day.

On May 24, Korea CQ had the lecture on ‘From Corporate Social Responsibility to Creating Shared Value with NESTLE’ by Erwan Vilfeu, CEO of Nestlé Korea at the Austrian ambassador's residence, located at Seongbuk-dong.

Members who participated were H.E. Elisabeth Bertagnoli, H.E. Arslan Hakan Okcal, Pinar Okcal, Erwan Vilfeu, Patricia Vilfeu, Junghwa Choi, Haelyung Hwang, Changmin Lee, Patrick Defranoux, Nathalie Defranoux, Jai Wook Lee, Ian Jeong, Jae Chul Sung, Uloff Munster, Sandrine Spriet, Didier Beltoise, Myung Ja Kim, Yoon Young Kim, Vivian Han, Mihe Shin, and Crystal Park.

The forum started with a welcoming speech by H.E. Elisabeth Bertagnoli, followed by a video showing the beautiful charms of Austria.

Before the lecture, we enjoyed the delicious Austrian dinner with wine, all specially prepared by H.E. Elisabeth Bertagnoli, at the outdoor garden.

After finishing dinner with delicious dessert, the lecture of Erwan Vilfeu, CEO of Nestlé Korea started. Korea CQ members had time to learn about innovative management philosophy on Creating Shared Value from Mr. Vilfeu, who led Nestle’s representative Creating Shared Value project, ‘NESCAFÉ Plan’ in Africa.

The lecture started with the question, ‘how many people here think they understand the difference between shared value and corporate social responsibility?’

Members learned of the growth process of Nestlé, one of the largest global F&B companies which has 447 factories, operates in 194 countries, and has around 339,000 employees.

It was an interesting lecture where members had the opportunity to learn about the difference between CSR and CSV.

Mr. Vilfeu said ‘CSV is about giving back. CSR is about behaving responsibly. It’s about good citizenship. But creating shared value is different. It’s not about slicing up the pie to give more back. It’s about making the pie bigger by increasing productivity’.

We would like to thank H.E. Elisabeth Bertagnoli for her warm hospitality, from giving us an opportunity to have an unforgettable night at her residence to offering us wonderful Austrian food. We would also like to thank all members who were able to take their precious time to attend the Korea CQ lecture.

Special thanks to Erwan Vilfeu for his informative lecture.

Coming on June 14, Korea CQ will be having the Summer Welcoming Alumni Gathering, and U.S. Ambassador to Korea H.E. Mark Lippert generously invited Korea CQ members to his residence.

We are looking forward to our members' active participation.

Notes on Erwan Vilfeu's lecture is attached below.

Thank you again for your support and have a nice day.

<Lecture notes of Erwan Vilfeu, CEO of Nestlé Korea>

From Corporate Social Responsibility to Creating Shared Value with NESTLE’

Lecturer: Erwan Vilfeu, CEO of Nestlé Korea

Nestlé
Nestlé has grown from a company 150 years ago by the Page brothers at the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company. It also honors their namesake, H Nestle, that founded the company based on the success of a lifesaving infant cereal and launched Nestlé on its path to the Nutrition, Health and Wellness strategy of today.

Nestlé’s growth has enabled it to improve the lives of millions of people – through the products and services it provides and through employment, its supplier network and the contribution it makes to economies around the world.

4.1 million families earn a living because of Nestlé, including many rural small holders in developing countries. In 2015 Nestlé supported the livelihood of 695,000 farmers and directly employed 339,456 people.

Being a global leader brings not only the duty to operate responsibly, but also an opportunity to create long term positive value for the society.

Nestlé’s CSV

According to the Nestlé’s CSV pyramid, every company has to comply with legal requirements to operate in a region. Secondly, they need to operate in a sustainable manner so that they can meet the needs in the future without undercutting them to meet the needs of the present; that’s sustainability. Thirdly, they have an opportunity to create Shared Value to go beyond sustainability and compliance to find new opportunities to make money by solving social problems.

The difference between CSV and CSR

CSR is about giving back and behaving responsibly. It’s about good citizenship. But creating shared value is different. It’s not about slicing up the pie to give more back. It’s about making the pie bigger by increasing productivity.

It does not just tap into the limited CSR budget but it taps into the entire budget of the company.

NESCAFE Plan

To ‘secure good quantity and quality of green coffee’ with the objective to Creating Shared Value, Nestlé launched the NESCAFE Plan 5 years ago.

The Nescafé Plan is a global initiative that brings together its commitments and activities that support responsible farming, production and supply, and consumption of coffee. The Nescafé Plan promotes responsible farming in four main ways:

Training: Nestlé is committed to training farmers on the techniques and guidelines that comprise our Better Farming Practices

Visits from sourcing staff: Nestlé’s team of over 220 sourcing staff visited more than 30,000 coffee farmers in 14 countries to provide expertise and help to implement good practices in the field.

Farmer Connect: Purchasing green coffee locally in an efficient way helps us develop local supplies for our factories, and to work with growers to make improvements at a farm level.

Ensuring the future of coffee farms: Nestlé is investing in improving coffee trees through plant science, largely through its R&D Centre in Tours, France.
