< World History of Ceramics>
-How did you start making pottery? President Yi Yoonshin first started to make pottery in 1977. During her university days, she was impressed by pottery and felt happy when she made the potteries. Because of that passionate feeling, she could start it as career.
- What is the meaning of YIDO? The meaning of Yido is ‘Yi’ from her name ‘Yi Yoonshin’ and ‘Do’ from ‘Dojaki’ which means pottery in Korean.
-When people think of ‘pottery’ they probably think that ‘Pottery is not comfortable to use, and very sensitive. That’s the reason why many people hesitate to using it. However, pottery can be washed in dishwasher. I think it is very important to spread the knowledge of the pottery.
-History of Kilns: The first kilns was ‘Pit Firing’; putting all the ceramics at one place and put fire on it. The next one was climbing kilns. This climbing kilns has 7~8 floors. Then Natural Gas Kilns appeared. It became more convenient for people to make pottery by using natural gas kilns. Then these days, we use electric kilns. By using it, the temperature of the kilns go up to the temperature in a short time.
-1,700 years ago, first ceramics were appeared in China. They are the very first potteries to hold water without absorption.
-Goryeo was the 2nd country to produce ceramics in the world after China. Also, in Joseon dynasty, simple looking and pure-white color porcelains were appeared.
-Spread of Ceramics: Islam -> China -> Goryeo -> Japan -> Europe
-During the invasion from 1592 to 1598, over 1000 ceramists of Joseon were kidnapped to Japan. Because of this, the Japan’s ceramics advanced greatly.
-Yido’s characteristic: I think the special characteristic of Yido is the ‘Design’. Yido uses two tone color when making pottery. We make two different color whether using glazing or not, so the pottery of Yido is simple but elegant.
-Yido is the premium handmade pottery company which President Yi Yoonshin design all the pieces by herself. Yido was the main sponsor for the Korea booth at World Expo Milano 2015, and recently Yido held an exhibition in Paris. Also Yido became famous when Michelin 3 Star Chef Jean Georges Vongerichten used Yido’s plates at the documentary ‘Kimchi Chronicles’.
