<Lecture note of Theresa Rah, President of Oratio>

'How to Communicate Globally'

Lecturer: Theresa Rah, President of Oratio

1. Leadership, Women, Communication

There were 3 essential factors behind the success of the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic after 3 times: Leadership, Women, and Communication.

We showed our united leadership to IOC members. Instead of using several leaders, we appointed one main leader who could represent our actions so that we could successfully convey our united message to them.

We had many challenges before we won. We learned from the two losses in the past that we needed 1) a 'face(model)' who could represent the brand, 2) unified effort for international relations, 3) greater cooperation wit the KOC, and 4) better communicative materials.

Also, in order to prevent any arrogance, we went back to the first step to take a survey of the image of Korea on the third party's view. The result was: hard-working, innovation, intelligent, and dynamic for positive images. Contrary to the positive images, there were negative images such as insular, introverted, colorless, and stubborn.

Using the positive images, we showed our hard-working attitude to IOC members that we keep promises even though we failed to win the Olympic attraction 2 times, and we suggested the best plans with the creativity. Most importantly, we focused Korea's image as new market and new opportunity for people all over the world, especially for the young generation, which differentiates from our competitors.

2. Message: 'New Horizons'

Since IOC wanted to attract the interests of young generations, we tried to show Koreans' dynamic and energetic "Heung" with the slogan of 'New Horizons.' Over one and a half years, the audiences changed a lot but we kept and spread this message consistently and repeatedly. One short, strong central message like 'New Horizons' which allows the listener to remember easily was our unique competitiveness compared to Germany and France.

With the official slogan for Pyeongchang Olympic 'Passion. Connected.' and a slogan for Korea 'Creative Korea,' we conveyed our united messages consistently which turned out to be very effective.

Also, we used Korean women and communications to improve the negative images of Korean people. Not only with Yuna Kim but also with many Korean women who have international networks first did listen what others say instead of talking and tried to communicate in sincere manner to convey their stories, consequently leading to improve the image of Korea.

3. Study Your Audience

The essence of communication is not 'What I am talking about' but 'Drawing the attention of the audiences with eye contact.' So we got close to the audiences personally, talked to them, had lunch in order to find who they were as 'a person.' Here, listening is the most important thing as well. Instead of talking about Pyeongchang, we had daily life conversations such as love and business. In this process, we can draw the speakers' favor and open their mind.

4. RASA: Receive, Appreciate, Summarize, Ask

Remember the 4 factors below for successful communication:

RASA: Receive, Appreciate, Summarize, and Ask

Listen first and show appropriate responses. Summarize what you hear from the speaker and ask them questions related to the topic. In other words, listen carefully instead of talking. By listening, you can earn the speaker's trust and heart.

When you speak, take care of your sound and facial expression. Sound strength can effectively convey your message and appropriate face expression can draw attention of the listener. Practice with recording and videotaping of yourself is the basic step to the successful communication and presentation.

5. Effective Communication

Remember. Effective communications is 20% what you know and 80% how you feel about what you know.

<Q&A>

Q. Jungwha Choi, President of CICI: This morning, the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was held. As a competent communicator, what do you think of both candidates’ communication skills?

A. Theresa Rah, President of Oratio: This is my own opinion, Hillary Clinton prepared a lot but not all the people understood her speech. Donald Trump makes people remember what he said by speaking one simple message consistently. People even remember his body gestures. At this point, I think Mr. Trump’s communication skill is more effective.

Q. Gee Chan Kwon, Chairman of Wearfun: There are many different opinions about chairman Cho Yang-ho, who was a head of South Korea’s bid committee. As a team member who worked with him, what do you think of him?

A. Theresa Rah, President of Oratio: When Pyeongchang failed twice, Korean people were devastated to lose. Under these conditions Mr. Cho knew very well about both the IOC and also us. He showed strong leadership and practiced very hard for the presentation. He was a little bit shy but he overcame it by practicing steadily twice a week. And it led to good result.

Q. Uloff Münster, President of Merck: What do you think of the biggest reason for the success of Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics?

A. Theresa Rah, President of Oratio: I think, our ‘Passion’.

Q. Didier Beltoise, President of Cs: With only 500 days to go until the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics, what message would you like to deliver?

A. Theresa Rah, President of Oratio: The image of Korea changed a lot after 2002 World Cup. People around the world noticed Korean’s Passion. The Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics is a good chance to show how Korea has changed after 2002 World Cup. I look forward to promoting ‘heung()’ all over the world which is the passion of Korean plus fun.

Q. Seong Hun Choi, President of MID: Many people call you (Ms. Rah) ‘Cinderella of Durban’, ‘Queen of Durban’, what do you think of these expressions?

A. Theresa Rah, President of Oratio: I’m shy of the expression ‘Queen’. I think these expressions are too good for me. I’m just trying to be the person like that, and I just want to improve myself steadily.
