Dear Korea CQ members, I hope you are having a wonderful day. On October 17, Korea CQ visited the ‘Choonwondang
Museum of Korean Medicine’ in Jongro, Seoul. H.E. Clare Fearnley, Bill Miner, Brent
Fearnley, Ann Fearnley, Jaewon Seok, Younsun Lee, Youngsuk Yoon, Kyung Yoon, Choi
Jungwha, and Didier Beltoise, Hyojin Chung attended this forum. CQ members arrived at the museum and
enjoyed the delicious Korean dosirak for dinner. During the dinner, Dr. Youngsuk Yoon, 7th director of Choonwondang hospital of Korean medicine and Mrs. Younsun Lee, director of Choonwondang Museum of Korean Medicine, warmly welcomed CQ members.
After dinner, members headed to the museum
of Korean Medicine. The Choonwondang Museum of Korean Medicine
opened in 2008, and has contributed to making traditional Korean medicine
familiar to both Koreans and foreigners by collecting, preserving and researching
various cultural assets. Open for 8 generations since 1847, Choonwongang has
worked with Korean medicine as a family business. The various artifacts that
have been collected throughout the years can now be seen in the Museum’s
exhibitions. In the exhibition area on the 5th floor, members could see the traditional Korean medical artifacts including pots, needles, dispensers, ornaments and medicine cabinets.
Korea CQ members also had an opportunity to see the special exhibition, ‘Medicinal Instrument: The Journey of Prescription’ which will open on October 19th to the public, and they listened to explanations of the process of making dry medicinal ingredients and various kinds of medicine products.
Then, members had a time to make their own souvenir ‘Baeksoo Baekbokdo’ by taking a ‘Baeksoo Baekbok’ stamp. The Chinese characters ‘Baeksoo Baekbok’ means longevity, health and happiness.
The tour moved downstairs to the 4th
~ 3rd floor, where members could see the process of ingredient
inspection and storage of herbs. Members were especially impressed by the medicine
manufacturing machine which can take one medicine for each jar on the manufacture
and boiling room. Members then moved onto the lower level of
the exhibition, which displayed the archive of Choonwondang hospital collected
by Choonwondang’s 8 generation since 1847. After the tour, members were absorbed in the
interesting history of Korean medicine, and had an active Q&A time about
the medical examination, various oriental medicine and medicinal herbs. Through the curator’s sincere answers,
members could better understand Hanbang, Korean medicine. CICI would like to thank all CQ members who
attended the tour. We would also like to express our gratitude
to Dr. Youngsuk Yoon and Mrs. Younsun Lee for their kind support in organizing
the wonderful tour for Korea CQ. Last but not least, we would like to thank
Hyojin Chung for her outstanding interpretation help. On November 7, Korea CQ will be holding a
lecture on '3D Creativity & Future Strategy' given by Professor Kwang-Hyung
Lee, the head of KAIST graduate school of Future Strategy at the residence of
the Latvian Ambassador. We are looking forward to our members’ active
participation. Thank you again for your continued support. Sincerely, Korea CQ Nayun Shin
