Korea's Tourism on the Rise Thanks to 'PyeongChang' On May 21, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization announced the results of their '2017 Korea's Tourism Promotion Marketing Effectiveness Survey,' which analyzed Korea's competitiveness as a tourist destination in 2017. Korea's recognition as a tourist destination was 56.5%, 3.3% higher than the previous year, and this is the highest since 2012. The results for Gangwon-do, the city where the PyeongChang Olympic Games are held, showed that awareness of the area was 14.2% - an increase of 3.8% compared to the previous year - showing the highest upturn among 16 cities and provinces. The Philippines and Vietnam ranked the first and second among the 10 countries that favor Korean tourism. In China, where trips to Korea are banned as a part of revenge for the THAAD deployment (High Altitude Missile Defense System), awareness and preference for Korean tourism declined year-on-year. Chinese tourists' awareness of Korean tourism dropped from 81.6% in 2016 to 75.4%, and preference dropped from 76.8% to 64.9%. |
