Tourists come to Korea with empty stomachs : Topping electronics, beauty and art, food has become the most sought-after experience to enjoy while visiting the peninsula
Aug 10,2018

At the entrance of Myeong-dong in Jung District, central Seoul, there is a food truck that sells what is known as the tornado potato, a fried potato that looks like a screw on a long stick. At top right is a list of top Korean restaurants made by Meishi Lin, China’s own version of Michelin. At bottom right is a list of great local restaurants in Korea made by Japanese tourists on the travel site, TripAdvisor. [NAM JEONG-HO]

Of the many different cultural elements that make up what is known as the Korean Wave, such as films, dramas, music, beauty products and more, the category most sought out by foreign travelers when they visit Korea is food.

According to a survey by the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange conducted in July, K-food was chosen as the No. 1 Korean product or service that people planned to spend money on, surpassing the other categories such as traditional cultural experiences, beauty, electronics and more. From traditional Korean dishes to street food, K-food is becoming a worldwide trend.

There are several reasons why Korean food is becoming so trendy and recognized. People tend to view Korean food as healthy, and the continuing popularity of Korean popular culture internationally is making a big impact. Especially Japanese tourists have found great hidden restaurants that even local epicureans have not yet discovered.

Despite the record-breaking high temperatures in July and early August, Myeong-dong in Jung District, central Seoul, remained crowded with tourists. The streets were also filled with Myeong-dong’s popular food trucks. Of the over 100 different food trucks, some sold Japanese okonomiyaki and Chinese dumplings, while others sold unique foods created locally.

The tornado potato is one good example. At the entrance of Myeong-dong, a food truck sells fried potato that looks like a screw circling a long stick. Although the tornado potato can now easily be found in China and throughout Southeast Asia, it was first created by a small local business in 2006. The company has registered for intellectual property rights for their tornado potato, but they have turned a blind eye for the benefit of local street vendors.

However, they have not been so easygoing when they see evidence of their product being made by companies abroad. In China, the company was in a long legal battle regarding property rights and eventually won.

Roasted rice cakes and cheese is another unusual street food found in Myeong-dong. Rice cakes with cheese on top are skewered onto a stick and roasted over a fire. After they’re cooked, the roasted cheese and rice cake is covered in condensed milk. The owner of a food truck selling the treat, Oh Jae-mu, says, “Although you can find many roasted cheese dishes abroad, the treats made with rice cakes are probably only found in Korea.”

Oh started selling roasted rice cakes and cheese two years ago. “At first, I wasn’t selling much, but when people started [posting them] on social media, they started to gain attention and now they’re quite popular.”

At right is a scene from the SBS hit drama series “My Love from the Star,” in which actor Jun Ji-hyun is eating chimaek, the Korean slang word referring to the combination of chicken and beer. Like these street food treats, K-food is gaining popularity thanks to the higher quality of food and chefs in Korea in general, says Kim Eun-jo, editor-in-chief of a local restaurant guide Blue Ribbon Survey.

“In the past, I liked restaurants with chefs who were from the country of the food’s origin, but nowadays, I think foreign restaurants run by Korean chefs are better.” Kim believes that Korean chefs who have refined their skills abroad make better pizza and pasta, for example, than an Italian chef working in Korea.

The rising influence of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, is another reason behind Korean food’s popularity.

After the SBS drama “My Love from the Star” became a hit in 2014, chimaek, a Korean portmanteau of chicken and maekju, the Korean word for beer, became a popular comfort food combination for people outside of Korea, with restaurants in China and Southeast Asia offering the combination after seeing it being enjoyed on the show.

These days, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), a long-time favorite dish among Koreans, is the new “it food” that is gaining popularity in not just Asia, but also in the U.S. and Europe. This was made possible thanks to Korean boy band BTS, and a video they posted on YouTube introducing tteokbokki to their fans.

Choi Jung-wha, the president of the Corea Image Communication Institute (CICI), said, “Recently, a public figure from the U.K. made a visit to Korea with her daughter, and the first place they wanted to go was a tteokbokki restaurant.” She added, “I once again felt the power of Hallyu, knowing that it was an influence from BTS’ endorsement.”

Health and wellness trends have also helped boost the popularity of K-food globally. Many people looking for ways to eat healthy find bibimbap (rice mixed with vegetables) to be an excellent option. According to research done by CICI, the No. 1 Korean food people want to introduce abroad is bibimbap. Since 2007, when CICI first began their survey and research regarding Korean food, bulgogi (grilled marinated meat) has been the No. 1 choice. However, for the first time this year, bibimbap took the top spot.

With the increase in tourists visiting the country, there has been a spike in interest in local restaurants. In July, “Kodoku No Gurume,” a famous mukbang (a combination of the words “eating” and “program” in Korean) series in Japan, came to Korea and filmed an episode introducing Korean dishes. The show’s star visited local restaurants in Seoul to try grilled spareribs and in Jeonju, North Jeolla for a taste of authentic bibimbap.

The show is evidence that more and more Japanese visitors are on the hunt for hidden restaurants in Korea. To find more information, they visit TripAdvisor, one of the world’s largest travel sites, and refer to the list of must-visit Korean restaurants made by Japanese tourists. Some of the restaurants listed in the top 10 are ones that even local food enthusiasts do not know about, such as unique Scandinavian or African restaurants.

For Chinese tourists, there is Meishi Lin (Gourmet Forest), a company under Ctrip, China’s largest online travel agency, which evaluates restaurants, and many Korean restaurants have been introduced and assessed since last year. This company, which is China’s version of Michelin, has their own food critics who judge and rate restaurants out of three stars. They also give restaurants that have three stars their very own Meishi Lin approval sticker to put on the front door. Many of the restaurants listed on the top 10 by Meishi Lin are also ones that have gotten good reviews from Michelin.

The CICI president, Choi, said “Instead of insisting on traditional dishes that even locals do not eat, it would be better to promote popular Korean food that is gaining attention among foreign visitors such as bibimbap, tteokbokki and chimaek, in order to globalize Korean food.”
